Grooming
Light coat care with regular fold and tail-pocket checks where needed.
Utility Medium adult scale
Affectionate, steady and delightfully determined, Bulldogs often enjoy close companionship and a relaxed home routine. Their distinctive character should never depend on restricted breathing or uncomfortable movement. Look for open nostrils, quiet breathing and sound mobility, with veterinary guidance on suitable exercise and warm-weather care.
France
Keep the individual dog’s health, behaviour and needs ahead of a breed label. The shared size and activity ranges below are planning guides, not French legal standards.
Prioritise easy breathing and comfortable movement over appearance. Heat and exertion planning need particular care; noisy or difficult breathing is not something to dismiss as normal for the breed.
Check French acquisition and identification requirements separately from pedigree paperwork. For a dog whose legal category is uncertain, ask a vet and the relevant authority before buying, adopting or travelling.

Typical adult pet: Roughly 18–27 kg · Exercise: 30–60 minutes, health permitting. These are editorial planning estimates, not measured breed-population ranges, healthy-weight targets or exercise prescriptions.
Companionable, but breathing, heat tolerance and mobility may limit ordinary activities.
Light coat care with regular fold and tail-pocket checks where needed.
30–60 minutes, health permitting. Age, fitness, health, weather and the quality of enrichment can change what an individual dog needs.
Plan particularly for breathing assessment and heat protection.
Use kind, reward-based training and build skills gradually. Breed can suggest inherited tendencies; it cannot determine a dog’s personality.
Real-world size
Roughly 18–27 kg is a rounded editorial estimate; its coverage of the adult pet population has not been independently validated. RKC show standard: about 23–25 kg. Neither figure decides whether an individual dog is healthy or proves pedigree. A veterinary body-condition assessment is more useful than aiming for a number alone.
Ask for the health tests relevant to both parents and verify results independently. Avoid exaggerated features that compromise breathing, movement, eyes, skin or ordinary activity. A responsible breeder or rescue should welcome careful questions.
Children, other animals, time alone and first-time ownership cannot be decided by breed label alone. Temperament, early experience, health, training, management and the household all matter.

Return to the breed guideActivity ideas are editorial examples informed by the sources below, not a validated exercise prescription. Breed labels and crossbreed parentage cannot predict an individual’s needs. No universal daily minutes or puppy “five minutes per month” formula is used.
Stop and call an emergency vet for collapse or difficult breathing. New pain, limping, unusual exhaustion or a change in willingness to move needs veterinary advice before progressing a routine.
Offer comfortable, gentle exploration and easy floor-level searches, with frequent opportunities to pause. Enjoyment matters more than distance.
Noisy breathing at rest or light exercise is not a healthy breed trait. Obtain veterinary advice and avoid using exercise to push through breathing difficulty.
Keep exploration and play brief and self-paced, with frequent sleep opportunities. Avoid forced running, repeated jumps and tiring a puppy out. Ask your vet when local outdoor exposure is suitable during vaccination.
Physical maturity varies. Practise easy skills in quiet places, reward checking in and allow recovery after excitement. Do not add exhausting exercise to solve frustration or poor recall.
Maintain activities already comfortable for this dog and introduce changes gradually. Mix physical movement with exploration and learning rather than measuring success by distance.
Use familiar, accessible routes and gentler activities with pauses. A shorter outing can still include rich sniffing. Do not dismiss stiffness or reduced enjoyment as simply old age: discuss changes with your vet.
An example day: comfortable morning exploration, a quiet rest, a small daytime learning or play opportunity, then a suitable evening outing and an undisturbed night. Toilet needs, medical instructions and your dog’s preferences take priority. Adapt the order to your household; this is not a minimum quota.
Provide an undisturbed comfortable resting space between activities and overnight. A dog choosing to stop is information, not disobedience. Persistent difficulty settling needs support, not automatic extra exercise.
Review comfort during the activity, afterwards and the following day. Reduce demands and seek advice for pain, persistent fatigue or a new change. Check weather, access rules and outdoor hazards before each outing.
