Can My Dog Eat This?
Search for an ingredient or exposure. Not finding it does not mean it is safe. Check the whole recipe, packaging and formulation; this database cannot identify a plant or mushroom from a photo.

Only a small occasional snack, prepared as described; not a balanced meal. Individual allergies, age, disease and prescribed diets may make it unsuitable. Cut to avoid choking.
Possible signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, unusual behaviour, weakness, tremors or breathing changes. Signs vary by substance and may be delayed; absence of signs does not clear an exposure.

ASPCA: sharing foods · My Dog Ate ThisPeanut butter
Caution — preparation matters
Check every label for xylitol (E967 / birch sugar); avoid if present or uncertain. High fat: only a small amount if appropriate for the dog.
Check the full ingredient list for xylitol (E967 or birch sugar). If present or the recipe cannot be confirmed after ingestion, call a vet now; do not wait for signs. A small amount of confirmed xylitol-free plain peanut butter is not automatically poisoning, but its fat and calories may make it unsuitable. Seek advice for a large amount, new symptoms or relevant illness; do not give home remedies.
VCA: food and treats for training · My Dog Ate ThisCheese / dairy
Caution — preparation matters
Not blue cheese. Dairy can cause digestive upset; avoid rich or heavily salted products.
A small piece of ordinary plain cheese is not automatically poisoning in an otherwise well dog, although dairy or rich foods can upset digestion. This does not include blue or mouldy cheese, toxic added ingredients or swallowed packaging: call a vet now about those exposures. Seek advice for a large amount, new symptoms or dietary restrictions. Choose an appropriate small reward rather than making cheese a regular meal.
VCA: food and treats for training · My Dog Ate ThisHam / fatty scraps / processed meat
Avoid feeding
Avoid ham, bacon, sausages and other salty or fatty processed meats as routine treats. A tiny piece of plain ham is not automatically poisoning; risk depends on ingredients, quantity and the dog. Choose small pieces of plain cooked lean meat instead.
Contact a vet promptly for a large or uncertain amount, onion/garlic ingredients, a prescribed diet or relevant illness, or new symptoms. Collapse, tremors or seizures need emergency care. Keep fresh water available; do not force drinking or induce vomiting. A small known bite in a well dog without dietary restrictions is not automatically an emergency.

Call your vet now about suspected harmful or uncertain ingestion, even if your dog looks well. Remove access safely, keep packaging and note what, how much and when. Do not induce vomiting or give salt, peroxide, charcoal, milk, oil or other home remedies unless a vet specifically directs treatment.
PDSA: harmful ingestion · My Dog Ate ThisRaw meat / raw eggs
Avoid feeding
Avoid feeding raw animal products because of infection and household-contamination risks. This is different from a food containing a specific poison.
Raw meat or eggs can carry bacteria that affect dogs and people; ingestion does not by itself prove poisoning. Wash hands, bowls and contaminated surfaces and prevent further access. Bones, packaging, toxic seasonings or spoiled food need separate urgent exposure advice. Contact a vet promptly for vomiting, diarrhoea or other illness, or an uncertain exposure, and ask about appropriate feeding for vulnerable dogs or households. Do not induce vomiting.

Supermarket meats: check before sharing
“Cooked chicken” or “roast beef” on a packet does not mean unseasoned meat. Sliced sandwich meats, deli meats and ready-cooked chicken may contain added salt, brine, stock or seasonings. Ham is usually cured and salty.
A practical choice for treats
For routine rewards, choose tiny pieces of thoroughly cooked, lean, boneless meat with no added salt or seasoning. Remove skin and visible fat. Avoid cured, smoked, brined, glazed or heavily salted products as everyday treats. Check ingredients for onion and garlic, including powders, and avoid these products. “Reduced salt” is not a guarantee of suitability; check the full recipe and the salt per 100 g, not just the front of the packet. Ask at the deli counter if no ingredient list is available; if uncertain, choose something else.
Portions and individual needs
A human sandwich portion can be a large amount for a Chihuahua or another small dog. Keep treats small and count them within the day’s food allowance; complete dog food should remain the main diet. Dogs need sodium, but this does not mean they need salty human treats or that their complete food should be made salt-free. Ask your vet about treats for a dog with a prescribed diet, heart or kidney disease, or a history of pancreatitis. No universal “safe number of slices” applies.
If your dog has already eaten some
An occasional tiny piece of plain ham is unlikely to cause a problem in an otherwise healthy dog, and is not automatically salt poisoning. Some veterinary charities allow small ham pieces as occasional rewards; our everyday recommendation is plain, unsalted lean meat. Call a vet promptly if the amount is large or uncertain, the ingredients include onion or garlic, your dog has relevant illness or dietary restrictions, or develops vomiting, diarrhoea, unusual thirst, weakness or abdominal pain. Collapse, tremors or seizures need emergency veterinary help. Keep the packaging and note the amount and time. Offer access to fresh water without forcing drinking. Do not induce vomiting or give home remedies.
