Hair loss & changing coat condition
Distinguish shedding from unexplained baldness or coat thinning.
Shedding versus hair loss
Many dogs shed in cycles, sometimes more noticeably with seasonal changes. Normal shedding should not automatically explain new bald patches or extensive thinning. Localised hair loss, symmetrical patches, altered texture or excessive shedding with skin changes merits veterinary discussion.
Patterns help, but do not diagnose
Hair can be lost because of parasites, irritation, licking, infection, friction or hormonal disease, among other causes. A symmetrical pattern does not prove a hormonal cause. Coat changes and itching can occur together, but lack of itching does not rule out disease.
Prepare for assessment
Note when you first noticed the change, whether it is spreading and whether the skin is red, dark, flaky or sore. Tell your vet about appetite, thirst, weight and energy changes. Bring details of diet, supplements, medicines and parasite treatments. Photographs showing the same area over time can help.
Care while waiting
Handle affected skin gently and avoid trying several shampoos or supplements before the cause is assessed. Check collar or harness friction without abandoning secure identification or restraint. Follow veterinary advice about protecting exposed skin. Seek prompt care if there is pain, infection or general illness; otherwise arrange an appointment for unexplained loss. Skin and itching and older-dog nutrition explain related considerations.
