Owner resilience and home health

Household rubbish, bins and compost

Prevent scavenging of mouldy waste, bones, packaging and sharp objects.

Secure waste before it is interesting

Use sturdy closed bins and prevent access to compost, bags awaiting collection and food-preparation waste. Mouldy food/compost can cause serious illness; cooked bones, skewers, corn cobs and packaging may obstruct or injure. Secure used medicine and chemical packaging too.

Plan visitors and gatherings

Ask people to clear plates and keep rubbish closed. A dog’s normal manners may not hold when food is left accessible. Separate during clear-up and check garden areas after barbecues.

If something is missing

Contact the vet about suspected harmful ingestion and retain details safely. Do not pull string protruding from the mouth or anus, or induce vomiting unless instructed. Food/toxin database · Ingestion first response · Object hazards.
