Seasonal care Hot weather

Cooler choices.
Safer days.

Dogs can overheat quickly. Adjust the plan to the dog and the conditions, rather than relying on the calendar alone.

Comfortable activity, with room to adapt

Panting helps dogs cool themselves and can occur after activity or excitement. A dog who remains alert, moves comfortably and returns towards their usual breathing after resting somewhere cool is showing encouraging signs. Panting that is unusually heavy, persistent or accompanied by effort or illness needs action; do not wait for every heatstroke sign below.

In comfortable conditions, a gentle sniffing walk with water and shade can still be enjoyable. There is no single temperature that guarantees safety: humidity, sun, effort, coat, health and individual tolerance matter. A cool pavement does not rule out overheating.

If conditions are unsuitable, offer brief toilet opportunities and calm enrichment in a cool room: scatter a little of the usual food, practise an easy cue or provide a suitable supervised food toy. Rest is a valid choice. Resume activity gradually when conditions and your dog are comfortable; suspected heat illness still needs urgent veterinary help even after cooling.

Warm-weather planning in France

Use local conditions, shade and your dog’s response—not a country-wide temperature rule—to decide whether an outing is safe.

Practical details and sources

Check conditions at the destination and plan quieter, cooler outings with drinking water and a way to return promptly. Hot ground, exposed car parks and a car that heats up can make an otherwise short trip unsafe.

Ask the local vet about hazards where you are staying. CAPAE-Ouest covers processionary caterpillars and other outdoor exposures; keep the dog away from suspicious caterpillars or nests and seek veterinary advice after contact.

Move walks to cooler hours.

Choose early morning or evening, reduce intensity and provide shade and water. If the ground is uncomfortably hot against your hand, choose a cooler route or wait. Flat-faced, older, very young, overweight, unwell and thick-coated dogs may be at greater risk.

Never leave a dog in a hot car.

Shade, an open window or a short stop does not make a parked vehicle safe. Plan journeys around breaks, water and a cool destination.

Suspect heatstroke?

Heavy panting, breathing difficulty, excessive drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting, collapse or seizures require urgent action. Move the dog into shade or a cool room and start cooling immediately with cold tap water, keeping water away from the nose and mouth. Do not cover the dog with wet towels. Contact a vet urgently and arrange transport; continue cooling safely during the journey where possible. Do not force drinking. Follow the veterinary team’s instructions.
