Human-inspired meals. Dog-friendly ingredients. Tail-wagging results.
Welcome to The Head & Paws Kitchen, where familiar family favourites receive a canine makeover. From miniature cooked breakfasts to Sunday roasts with all the suitable trimmings, discover proper little meals made especially for dogs.
Odie and Finn have kindly volunteered as resident food critics. Neither has expressed any interest in portion control.
Little plates. Big appetites. Absolutely enormous expectations.
Little dogs can enjoy big flavours too! Turn these familiar favourites into miniature treats, with practical preparation, portion and presentation tips. A mini burger still needs crumbling, a soft wedge may need mashing, and a tiny plate is not a portion measure. Odie and Finn’s individual needs are not a template for every Chihuahua.
Finn: “Small dog. Small plate. Very large appetite.”

This recipe is not complete and balanced. Keep the usual complete diet as the foundation; treats and extras together should generally supply no more than 10% of daily calories. Count extras within the daily total and reduce the usual ration by their calories, keeping at least 90% from complete food. Age, activity, body condition, medical needs and existing food all affect the allowance. A larger “special meal” needs a veterinary feeding plan rather than simply replacing a whole bowl of complete food.

Small hands, big help — and a very enthusiastic audience.
Choose tasks to suit the child’s age, ability and confidence, with an adult actively supervising. Wash hands before and after helping. Adults handle raw meat and fish, knives, ovens, hobs, hot pans and hot food, and clean away raw-food utensils before children join in. Keep dogs out of the cooking area. An adult checks the portion and serves in a calm space; children should not hand-feed, approach an eating dog or interrupt their meal.
Wash hands and surfaces, keep raw meat and fish separate from ready-to-eat food, and use a clean board and utensils after handling them. Do not wash raw poultry. Thaw frozen meat or fish fully in the fridge first. Wash vegetables; peel potatoes and reject green or sprouting ones. Use a clean probe in the thickest part; timings are guides, not proof of doneness.
For a healthy dog who tolerates the ingredients. Dogs with allergies, pancreatitis, digestive or kidney disease, prescribed diets, and puppies with particular nutritional needs may need individual veterinary advice before trying it. No onion, garlic, chives, leeks, grapes, raisins, xylitol or cooked bones. If poisoning is suspected, contact a vet promptly.
