Owner resilience and home health

Living with canine diabetes

Support the vet’s feeding, insulin and monitoring plan without adjusting doses yourself.

Build a consistent routine

Diabetes affects blood-glucose control and commonly requires long-term insulin care. Follow the vet’s schedule for meals, activity and injections, using the exact insulin, device and storage directions prescribed. Ask the team to demonstrate and confirm your technique. Do not swap products or calculate doses from a website.

Agree what happens when plans change

Ask in advance what to do if a meal is refused, a dose is missed/uncertain, vomiting occurs or care passes to someone else. Do not automatically give a normal dose when circumstances differ or repeat an uncertain injection: contact the team for the agreed individual instructions. Record intake, thirst, urination and weight, and monitor glucose only as trained.

Recognise urgent deterioration

Low blood glucose can cause weakness, wobbliness, tremors, collapse or seizures. Seek urgent veterinary help and use only the rescue plan specifically taught for your dog; do not put anything in the mouth of an unconscious or seizing dog. High glucose with vomiting, profound lethargy, dehydration or abnormal breathing can signal a serious crisis. Keep follow-ups; apparent improvement does not remove monitoring.
