Owner resilience and home health
Living with chronic kidney disease
Support hydration, the prescribed diet and monitoring while watching comfort and appetite.
Maintain the care plan
Chronic kidney disease affects the kidneys’ functions and varies between dogs. Follow the prescribed diet, medicines and rechecks; do not make home protein/mineral restrictions or add supplements without advice. Keep fresh water readily available unless specifically directed otherwise.
Watch daily wellbeing
Record appetite, nausea/vomiting, weight, drinking, urination and energy. Ask about strategies if the prescribed food is refused rather than allowing prolonged poor intake. Discuss environmental comfort, toileting access and quality of life alongside test results.
Escalate changes
Repeated vomiting, inability to keep water down, inability to urinate, collapse or marked deterioration needs urgent contact. New appetite/weight changes need timely advice. Kidney markers and stages require professional interpretation; never adjust medicines based on an isolated result. Understanding tests.
