Safety, recovery and life together

A dog lost away from home or abroad

Adapt your recovery plan to the location, transport operator and local authorities.

Act where the dog was last seen

Record a precise safe location and alert accommodation staff and nearby vets/animal-control services. Share a current photo and a phone number that works internationally. Tell the chip database where you are and confirm country code/contact availability. Keep someone coordinating sightings; do not travel home assuming someone else is searching.

Ports, airports and roads

Notify ferry/airport staff or the transport operator immediately; secure areas must be searched by authorised personnel. Do not enter runways, tracks or port operations. After a collision, prioritise human safety and emergency services, then tell responders a dog is missing and where last seen. Do not run into the carriageway.

Abroad and reunion

Ask official local animal control or municipal services about stray custody, reporting and release requirements; UK rules do not transfer abroad. Ask a local vet about injury and any lost medicines. If documents are missing or travel is disrupted, confirm re-entry requirements before booking onward transport. Travel With Your Dog.

Evidence and review

General guidance, not an individual medical, behavioural or legal assessment. The treating veterinary team’s instructions take priority. Search outcomes, recovery and dog relationships vary. Local services and legal arrangements must be confirmed for the location; procedures here are verified for the labelled UK nations and Republic of Ireland, not assumed to apply elsewhere.

Behaviour support should use humane, reward-based methods. Ask your vet about pain or illness and referral to an appropriately qualified clinical behaviour professional for safety concerns. In the UK, the ABTC register identifies assessed roles; check relevant species, role and referral requirements.
