Costs and moving with multiple dogs

Build an itemised budget, not a single estimate

Request written quotes for consultations, vaccination, blood tests, certification, endorsement, permits, transport, crates, handling and border charges. Include quarantine where applicable, accommodation, insurance, medicines and registration after arrival. Record currency, tax, per-dog versus per-booking charges and expiry of each quote. Keep an accessible contingency reserve for delays, reissued documents and emergency treatment. This guide does not invent a universal relocation price.

Two small dogs still need individual plans

For example, two small companion dogs may have different rabies expiry dates, confidence in a carrier and medication needs. Keep a separate document checklist and chip check for each. A single AHC may cover up to five eligible pets, but each animal still needs its own recorded details. Confirm the operator’s limits per passenger, carrier and booking; never assume two dogs may share because they live together.

Plan separation, space and handling

Use separate restraints and individual crates unless the carrier explicitly permits suitable sharing and your vet considers it appropriate. Practise being apart without forcing distress. Assign one handler’s tasks clearly: leads before doors open, safe handovers and one dog at a time when needed. Keep food and resting areas separate if tension develops. Retain familiar bedding where accepted, usual meals and quiet routines after arrival.

Larger groups require extra verification

More than five dogs, cats and ferrets together triggers additional EU/GB checks; do not assume each person can carry five in the same private vehicle. Event exceptions are narrow and do not cover an ordinary household move. Other countries use different classifications. Confirm with the competent authority before arranging transport, particularly where ownership changes or the owner’s journey is more than five days apart.

Official sources and verification

Substantive source check: 22 October 2026. These are dated references, not live monitoring. Recheck before booking and again before departure. Local rules and transport availability require separate confirmation.
