Republic of Ireland — Moving Abroad with Your Dog

Import pathway — confirm your origin

Entry summary below starts with a direct GB departure; EU→EU uses a valid accepted passport or onward-entry certificate instead. Other origins need official verification.

Mandatory for the ordinary GB→EU pathway: valid identification, rabies cover and an AHC with the required declaration. Use a designated entry point and current certificate model. GB-resident owners cannot rely on an EU passport. Titre testing is not routine for direct GB departures meeting the listed-country conditions.

Conditional mandatory tapeworm treatment: arrange a vet-administered and recorded treatment 24–120 hours before entry. Dates below are only calendar planning bounds; confirm the exact arrival time, time zones and exceptions with the vet.

Baseline shown: your own dogs, no ownership transfer, owner travelling with/within five days, up to five animals, direct route and verified listed/low-risk history. This table does not determine eligibility.

Routine titre testing and quarantine are not requirements of the compliant direct GB→named-EU or listed-country→GB baseline. They may become relevant with other histories or non-compliance. Permits and customs declarations depend on classification and territory; confirm them rather than assuming an exemption.

Destination notes and restrictions

Republic of Ireland is an EU destination, distinct from Northern Ireland. GB arrivals must use the appropriate EU entry pathway. Check DAFM’s advance-notice and compliance-check arrangements for the precise port/airport; book any required inspection. Tapeworm treatment ordinarily applies to GB arrivals.

After arrival: national and local steps

Resident ownership includes a dog licence and microchip registration on an approved database. Confirm local control rules and current restrictions on particular dog types before moving. The linked DAFM travel page was available in search but blocked direct retrieval during this review; exact port-notification timing is not calculated here.

Official sources and verification

Substantive source check: 22 October 2026. These are dated references, not live monitoring. Recheck before booking and again before departure. Local rules and transport availability require separate confirmation.
