Northern Ireland — Moving Abroad with Your Dog
Import pathway — confirm your origin
Baseline shown: your own dogs, no ownership transfer, owner travelling with/within five days, up to five animals, direct route and verified listed/low-risk history. This table does not determine eligibility.
Northern Ireland needs a DAERA check. GB residents may use NIPTS for eligible GB→NI travel with a microchip and PTD; this does not cover onward EU travel. Permanent residence changes, international arrivals and air notification need separate confirmation. This planner does not infer scheme eligibility or calculate NI deadlines.
| Requirement | Status for the stated baseline |
|---|---|
| Identification, valid rabies cover and the accepted travel document | Conditional — verify the actual route |
| Titre test, permits, endorsement, quarantine and customs | Conditional — verify the actual route |
| Local vet, insurance and welfare preparation | Recommended preparation |
Destination notes and restrictions
Do not apply GB import rules automatically. DAERA distinguishes GB→NI scheme travel, international arrivals and onward EU journeys. A move that changes the owner’s residence needs individual confirmation before relying on the scheme. Its PTD does not authorise travel to the Republic of Ireland or another EU country.
After arrival: national and local steps
GB→NI air travel requires advance contact with DAERA; GOV.UK specifies at least ten working days. Confirm the permanent-move procedure, arrival point, dog licence and local registration with DAERA and the relevant council. The planner intentionally withholds automatic NI eligibility and deadline calculations.
Official sources and verification
Substantive source check: 22 October 2026. These are dated references, not live monitoring. Recheck before booking and again before departure. Local rules and transport availability require separate confirmation.
