Owner resilience and home health
Medication handover to a temporary carer
Make medicine instructions clear and prevent missed or duplicated doses.
Use the actual prescription
Provide the dog’s identity, medicine name/form, label instructions, timing, last dose, next dose and any food requirements. Leave medicines in original packaging with the prescribing practice’s number and storage instructions. Do not copy a dose from memory if it can be checked against the current label.
Confirm understanding
Show the agreed administration method where possible and ask the carer to explain it back. For injections or complex medicines, arrange veterinary instruction and confirm the carer is willing and capable. Use a shared handover log with one person responsible at a time; multiple carers must not each assume a dose is due.
Problems require veterinary advice
Carers should not alter, stop, crush or double medication without veterinary direction. Ask the practice about a missed, vomited or uncertain dose; do not automatically repeat it. Escalate possible reactions or accidental ingestion immediately. General safe administration · Refills and monitoring.

Evidence and review
Owner information, not diagnosis, an individual dose or personal legal advice. Follow the treating veterinary team’s plan. Legal, medicine-supply and poison-service statements apply only to the labelled jurisdiction; general care principles do not establish local rules.
