Owner resilience and home health
When owner illness lasts longer
Review temporary arrangements and build a workable longer-term plan.
Reassess without blame
Care needs can change during serious illness or rehabilitation. Review the arrangement with the carer: duration, costs, medicines, exercise and welfare. Temporary help may become unsustainable even when everyone intends well. Ask for support before a crisis develops.
Plan together where possible
Keep the owner involved in choices according to their wishes and capacity. Identify a reliable coordinator, backup and access to records. Discuss safe contact with the dog if wanted and practical; hospital/visitor rules and the dog’s comfort matter.
Move to continuity planning
For prolonged incapacity or inability to resume care, agree longer-term options and seek legal advice on decision-making and finances. Rehoming can be a responsible welfare decision. Pet-Care Continuity Planning addresses these decisions without duplicating today’s urgent handover.
