Owner resilience and home health

Temporary versus permanent dog care

Choose care according to duration, welfare and realistic household capacity.

Clarify the expected arrangement

Temporary carers maintain care while ownership and recovery plans remain clear. Long-term/permanent care may involve a different agreement or ownership transfer. Agree dates, updates, costs and who decides if the owner cannot resume care; get appropriate legal advice where capacity or ownership is uncertain.

Compare options

Family/friends, professional carers and boarding may suit some dogs; medical needs can limit availability. Reputable rescue/rehoming organisations may help where ongoing care is impossible. Confirm capacity and eligibility rather than assuming a guaranteed place. Dogs Trust’s Canine Care Card has conditions and exclusions, including some legally restricted dogs.

Review welfare as well as logistics

Consider relationships between resident animals, children, rest, handling and the dog’s history. Do not force several dogs to stay together if that compromises safety, but explain bonded relationships to the organisation. Choosing temporary care · Boarding directory.
