Safety, recovery and life together
Bandages, splints and casts
Keep coverings dry and identify circulation, fit and wound concerns.
Protect the covering
Follow the team’s instructions for outdoor protection and remove temporary waterproof covers afterwards as directed. Keep the bandage dry, prevent chewing and attend scheduled changes. Do not insert objects beneath it, tighten it, cut it or rewrap it yourself.
Check visible areas
Where toes are exposed, watch for swelling, colour/temperature changes and discomfort. Look for slipping, wetness, discharge, odour, pressure sores or reduced use of the limb. Check above the bandage too. Report damage even if your dog seems comfortable.
Seek urgent reassessment
Sudden severe pain, swollen/cold/discoloured toes or marked mobility change needs urgent advice. A wet, slipped, chewed or smelly covering needs prompt practice contact. Do not wait until the next booked change.

Evidence and review
General guidance, not an individual medical, behavioural or legal assessment. The treating veterinary team’s instructions take priority. Search outcomes, recovery and dog relationships vary. Local services and legal arrangements must be confirmed for the location; procedures here are verified for the labelled UK nations and Republic of Ireland, not assumed to apply elsewhere.
Behaviour support should use humane, reward-based methods. Ask your vet about pain or illness and referral to an appropriately qualified clinical behaviour professional for safety concerns. In the UK, the ABTC register identifies assessed roles; check relevant species, role and referral requirements.
