Safety, recovery and life together
Giving prescribed medication safely
Use clear handovers and ask the practice about missed doses or administration problems.
Follow the label and plan
Check the correct dog, medicine, time and prescribed amount. Follow food requirements and complete courses as instructed. Use a written log and one named administrator at each handover. Do not share medicines between dogs, even with similar symptoms.
If a dose is missed or vomited
Contact the practice for medicine-specific advice. Do not double the next dose or repeat a vomited dose unless advised: some may already have been absorbed. If giving tablets is difficult, ask about an approved alternative; do not crush or open medicines without checking.
Storage and adverse effects
Keep medicines in their original labelled packaging, stored as directed and away from children/pets. Do not add human painkillers, supplements or leftover veterinary medicines. Call promptly for possible reactions; breathing trouble, collapse, severe swelling or seizures requires emergency help.

Evidence and review
General guidance, not an individual medical, behavioural or legal assessment. The treating veterinary team’s instructions take priority. Search outcomes, recovery and dog relationships vary. Local services and legal arrangements must be confirmed for the location; procedures here are verified for the labelled UK nations and Republic of Ireland, not assumed to apply elsewhere.
Behaviour support should use humane, reward-based methods. Ask your veterinarian about pain or illness and referral to an appropriately qualified clinical behaviour professional for safety concerns. In the UK, the ABTC register identifies assessed roles; check relevant species, role and referral requirements.
