Owner resilience and home health

Pregnancy: veterinary care and owner responsibilities

Confirm pregnancy professionally and plan welfare and emergency care.

Confirm rather than assume

Ask the vet to assess suspected pregnancy; appearance or nesting alone is unreliable because false pregnancy can look similar. Tell them any mating dates and medicines. Discuss appropriate confirmation, follow-up and whether the dog’s health creates additional risks.

Support care without improvising

Follow veterinary advice on complete nutrition, activity, medicines and parasite care. Do not add calcium, supplements or treatments on your own. Keep a calm secure environment and agree how to recognise problems and reach out-of-hours help.

Prepare for risks, not breeding optimisation

Pregnancy and birth can require urgent treatment and substantial costs. Severe illness, collapse, unusual painful discharge or difficulty giving birth requires urgent veterinary contact. Do not attempt internal examination, pulling puppies or home medicines. Agree high-level birth and neonatal support with the vet; this page does not provide a breeding or whelping protocol.

Owner information, not diagnosis, an individual dose or personal legal advice. Follow the treating veterinary team’s plan. Legal, medicine-supply and poison-service statements apply only to the labelled jurisdiction; general care principles do not establish local rules.
