A private field can create valuable breathing room, but “secure” is not a universal standard. Assess the fencing, arrival, surroundings and facilities against your dog’s behaviour and your own access needs.

Check the mairie, prefecture and land manager before relying on off-lead access. A good recall does not override a local restriction.

Practical details and sources

Dogs must be on a lead outside forest paths between 15 April and 30 June in woods and forests. Parks and other protected areas may restrict dogs even on a lead; read the current rules for the specific place.

Ask whether an enclosed area is shared or genuinely reserved for your household. Use the fence, gate, parking and changeover checklist below. Category rules and operator conditions must also be checked before booking.

Accès aux espaces en France

Du 15 avril au 30 juin, la laisse est obligatoire hors des allées forestières dans les bois et forêts. Certains parcs ou espaces protégés limitent l’accès même aux chiens tenus en laisse : consultez leurs règles actuelles.

On arrival, keep leads attached while you walk the boundary. Conditions can change after weather, maintenance or damage. If something is unclear or unsuitable, leave and tell the operator.

Choose by need

The right questions depend on who is using the space.

Nervous or reactive dog

Can surprise encounters be avoided?

Ask whether other dogs are visible at the gate, car park or adjoining fields; whether screens block views; how bookings are separated; and what happens if somebody arrives early. Quiet does not necessarily mean unseen or unheard.

Multiple dogs

Can the group enter safely?

Check booking limits, gate layout and whether one handler can move every dog securely from vehicle to field. Bring dogs who are comfortable together; a private field does not make incompatible dogs safe. Plan calm entry and exit to reduce gate crowding.

Accessibility

Is the whole route usable?

Ask about step-free access from parking, distance to the gate, gradients, surface and mud, gate width and force, seating, accessible toilets, assistance and emergency access. “Accessible” should describe specific features, not a general promise.

Search by need—not just distance.
