Sight & hearing changes

Practical adaptations and warning signs for sensory changes.

What owners may notice

A dog may hesitate in low light, bump into furniture, miss a familiar cue or startle when approached. Hearing changes may appear as reduced response rather than unwillingness to cooperate. Several causes are possible, including ear or eye disease, so arrange assessment rather than attributing the change automatically to age.

Make home predictable

Keep furniture and bowls in familiar positions, protect stair edges and remove low obstacles. Use useful lighting for dogs with remaining vision and introduce changes gradually. Explain the dog’s needs to visitors and children. Keep rest areas away from busy routes where accidental contact is likely.

Approach and wake gently

For a dog with reduced hearing, approach within their field of view where possible and use a familiar visual cue. Avoid abruptly grabbing or touching a sleeping dog. If touch is needed, agree a gentle, predictable approach with your veterinarian or behaviour professional and keep your face away from the dog’s face. Any startled dog can react defensively.

Walk safely

Use secure, comfortable equipment and a lead around roads, water and unfamiliar hazards. Practise visual cues in a safe setting and allow time to investigate routes. A secure field may offer freedom if its boundaries and access suit your dog. Reduced sight or hearing does not remove the need for enjoyable activity.
