Understanding ageing in dogs

Recognise gradual changes without dismissing new symptoms as old age.

When is a dog senior?

Ageing is a gradual process, not a disease or a diagnosis. Larger dogs often reach later life sooner than smaller dogs, but breed, genetics, previous illness and individual health also matter. A birthday alone cannot tell you which care a dog needs. Ask your veterinarian how they assess your dog’s life stage rather than using a universal age threshold.

Changes worth recording

A grey muzzle or a different preferred pace can develop gradually. Record changes in appetite, thirst, weight, sleep, toileting, movement and enjoyment, including when they began. A dated note or short video can make a consultation more useful. Compare your dog with their own usual behaviour, not another dog of the same age.

Avoid the “just old age” assumption

New stiffness, reduced interaction or accidents indoors may reflect pain, dental problems, sensory loss or another illness. A slow change still deserves discussion; a sudden change should be assessed more promptly. Contact your practice about a new or worsening symptom rather than waiting for the next scheduled check.

Keep life rewarding

Retain familiar routines while making them manageable: shorter outings, sniffing, quiet company and comfortable rest. Let your dog choose whether to join an activity and offer space from exuberant play. Use the routine planner flexibly; numerical targets do not override comfort.
