Why the work matters
Retirement ends the job—not the need for care.
Police dogs can spend years protecting communities, finding missing people, detecting harmful substances and supporting officers on the frontline. When their service ends, they receive no government or police pension. Responsibility for their care and veterinary bills passes to a former handler or new owner.
Working life can leave retired police dogs with conditions that need continuing medication, rehabilitation or major treatment. Thin Blue Paw helps eligible retired police dogs across the UK by contributing towards care including pain relief, hydrotherapy, emergency surgery, tumour removal and hip replacement.

Thin Blue Paw reports that it issued £300,000 in veterinary-care grants by its fourth birthday. Its support has covered routine medication and rehabilitation as well as urgent, complex treatment for retired police dogs across the country.
The Foundation was launched in August 2020 and is a registered charity in England and Wales, number 1190959.
