Why the work matters

Retirement ends the job—not the need for care.

Police dogs can spend years protecting communities, finding missing people, detecting harmful substances and supporting officers on the frontline. When their service ends, they receive no government or police pension. Responsibility for their care and veterinary bills passes to a former handler or new owner.

Working life can leave retired police dogs with conditions that need continuing medication, rehabilitation or major treatment. Thin Blue Paw helps eligible retired police dogs across the UK by contributing towards care including pain relief, hydrotherapy, emergency surgery, tumour removal and hip replacement.

Protect · Celebrate · Rehabilitate

Practical help.
Lasting respect.

01 / Rehabilitate

Veterinary grants

Financial support helps owners meet the cost of ongoing medication, rehabilitation and unexpected treatment for eligible retired police dogs.

02 / Protect

Safer service

The Foundation supports greater protection for serving dogs, canine first-aid provision and training for police dog handlers.

03 / Celebrate

Service remembered

The Thin Blue Paw Awards and its wider work recognise the bravery, loyalty and contribution of police dogs and their handlers.

04 / Campaign

A fairer retirement

The charity is calling for centrally funded pensions so the dogs that served UK communities receive meaningful support in retirement.

Published impact

More than warm words.
