Veterinary prescriptions and safe medicine supply

Understand practice supply, written prescriptions and monitoring requirements.

UK prescribing and reassessment

Prescription medicines require appropriate veterinary prescribing and clinical oversight. Discuss a written prescription where legally available, its fee, validity/repeats and the total cost of supplying the medicine. Monitoring or reassessment may be needed before repeat supply. A prescription is not an entitlement to unlimited refills.

Choose a legitimate supplier

Use a registered/authorised veterinary pharmacy or retailer and verify its status through the relevant regulator. The VMD’s AIRS list is a voluntary accreditation scheme, not the whole legal market. Avoid social-media sellers and altered prescriptions. Confirm formulation, storage, delivery and whether the supplier can legally supply to your destination.

GB, Northern Ireland and elsewhere

GB/NI medicine authorisation and supply arrangements differ; VMD guidance restricts some cross-border supplies. Do not assume a GB online order can lawfully be sent to NI, Ireland or another country. Ask the prescribing vet and supplier to confirm the route. Other countries use their own veterinary-medicine rules. Refill and monitoring planning.

Working With Your Vet

Check the instructions before giving a medicine

Ask the team to explain anything unclear on the current label, including timing with food, measuring equipment, storage and treatment duration. Confirm what to do if a dose is missed, vomited or uncertain; do not double or repeat it yourself. Report difficulty giving treatment or suspected side effects promptly. Severe symptoms need emergency help. Keep one current list across carers and practices.
