Requesting a second veterinary opinion

Seek another professional view while maintaining safe continuity of care.

A constructive choice

You can ask for another opinion when you want more clarity or reassurance. It does not establish that the first vet was wrong. Explain what remains uncertain and ask the original practice how to arrange records or referral. UK RCVS guidance supports facilitating these requests.

Share the full record

Tell the new practice about previous care, medicines and tests. Request relevant notes/results and ensure both teams know who is currently responsible. Ask whether new investigations would add value rather than repeating them automatically.

Do not delay urgent treatment

Maintain the agreed care and emergency plan while arranging the appointment. A seriously unwell dog needs immediate assessment, not a wait for a preferred clinician. Ask the professionals to explain differing opinions and options constructively.
